A United Airlines ticket counter confrontation at San Francisco International Airport has gone viral after an employee was recorded reportedly threatening to call ICE on a passenger during a heated ticketing dispute.

The incident involved passenger Julio Varela, a Mexican American and naturalized U.S. citizen from San Ramon, California, who was traveling with his family to Montreal. According to reports, the dispute began over a ticketing issue involving his daughter’s name on a reservation.
Varela said his family had spent hours trying to fix the problem before arriving at the airport, but the issue was still unresolved when they reached SFO. The family was reportedly moved between United and Air Canada counters as agents tried to correct the ticket.
The situation escalated after Varela became frustrated and began recording the interaction. In the video, the United employee can reportedly be heard saying, “Maybe we should call ICE on you.” When Varela asked her to repeat the comment, she allegedly responded that he did not “act like a citizen.”
The clip quickly spread online, drawing criticism from viewers who said immigration enforcement should never be used as a threat during a customer-service dispute. Others noted that the passenger also appeared angry and confrontational, showing how quickly airport conflicts can spiral when both sides lose control.
Live and Let’s Fly described the employee’s response as indefensible while also noting that the passenger was not blameless in the escalation. The key issue, however, is that the confrontation was about a ticketing problem, not immigration status.
KQED reported that Varela said his family had arrived at SFO around 8:15 a.m. for an 11:40 a.m. flight to Montreal. After nearly three hours of trying to fix the ticketing issue, the family was still working with airline staff shortly before boarding.
According to KQED, another United representative eventually stepped in and helped finalize the ticket issue, allowing the family to make the flight.
United Airlines has not released a detailed public explanation of the employee’s conduct. The airline told media outlets that it is looking into the interaction shown in the video.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which reportedly represents the employee, also said it was aware of the video but had not verified its full context. The union said the comments shown in the video do not reflect its views or values.
The incident has become especially sensitive because immigration enforcement at airports has been a major public concern in parts of California. For Varela, the alleged ICE remark turned a ticketing dispute into something far more personal and frightening.
For airlines, the video is another reminder that customer-service disputes can become national controversies within hours when they are recorded and shared online. Airport employees deal with angry passengers every day, but threats involving immigration enforcement can carry serious racial, legal, and reputational consequences.
The full facts of the encounter are still being reviewed, and United has not confirmed whether the employee has been disciplined. But the viral reaction shows how strongly passengers expect airline staff to stay professional, especially during stressful travel problems.
For now, the case remains under public scrutiny as travelers wait to see how United responds to a confrontation that began with a ticketing error and ended with a national backlash.
