Philippine Airlines has made one of its biggest long-haul fleet moves in years, committing to order up to 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft at the Farnborough Airshow.
The deal covers 15 Boeing 787-10 aircraft, with purchase rights for five more. If fully exercised, the agreement would give the Philippine flag carrier up to 20 new Dreamliners as part of a major fleet modernization plan.
The order is important because Philippine Airlines is preparing for future growth across medium- and long-haul routes. The Boeing 787-10 is the largest version of the Dreamliner family and is designed for routes where airlines need strong seat capacity, lower fuel burn, and modern passenger comfort.
Boeing said the 787-10 will complement Philippine Airlines’ existing fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft, giving the airline more flexibility across its international network.
For passengers, the aircraft could bring a noticeable upgrade on future long-haul services. The 787 is known for larger dimmable windows, improved cabin humidity, lower cabin altitude, and a quieter passenger experience compared with older widebody aircraft.
The 787-10 also gives airlines strong operating economics on routes where demand is high enough to support a larger twin-engine widebody, but where efficiency still matters. Boeing has described the Dreamliner as using about 25% less fuel than the aircraft it typically replaces.
The aircraft will be powered by GE Aerospace GEnx-1 engines, according to Reuters, with deliveries expected to begin in 2031.
The timing is also significant. The Farnborough Airshow remains one of the aviation industry’s biggest stages for aircraft deals, and widebody orders are closely watched because they show where airlines expect international demand to grow over the next decade.
For Philippine Airlines, the Dreamliner order supports a broader push to modernize its fleet, improve efficiency, and strengthen its position as the country’s full-service international carrier.
The airline already operates a long-haul network connecting the Philippines with destinations across Asia, North America, Australia, and the Middle East. New 787-10 aircraft could help PAL increase capacity on major routes while improving fuel efficiency and cabin consistency.
The order also strengthens Boeing’s position in Southeast Asia, where airlines are rebuilding fleets and preparing for future international travel demand. For Boeing, the agreement adds another widebody customer commitment during a period when the company is focused heavily on production recovery and 787 output.
For aviation watchers, this is more than a routine aircraft order. It shows Philippine Airlines preparing for the next phase of long-haul travel, with the 787-10 positioned as a key part of its future international fleet.
